From red light to energy

It is inside our cells that the phenomenon happens: to put it simply, they convert the light they capture into energy. The process induces a cell regeneration effect.

Here is the scientific explanation: our organism has a natural ability to repair itself. This ability deteriorates with age or occasionally, at certain periods of life. Natural cellular energy is produced by the mitochondria, the real powerhouses of our cells.

These mitochondria are equipped with photoreceptors (cytochrome C Oxydase enzyme) which capture photons from light. This generates chemical reactions and leads to the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the main source of energy for cells.

These photoreceptors have a particular affinity for red light, more precisely for the wavelength used by Helight ™ (630nm).

During the past decade, numerous teams have studied the influence of light on various biological processes (regulation of body mass, general metabolism and homeostasis), and on well-being (depressive syndrome). Preclinical studies have made it possible to describe the consequences of an excess of light or conversely of a total deprivation of light.

The observed effects of red light on cognitive functions

The action of light on cognitive functions will manifest itself in the form of a reduction in stress and anxiety, an action on mood and a reduction in symptoms of depression and sleep disorders.

According to published studies, there is an increase in alpha waves as well as an improvement in attention, alertness, memory and concentration. Improvements in sleep disorders were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) test.

Medical research has highlighted many actions of light on living organisms.

Each discovery led to technological innovations. This is how we went from the benefits of white light rich in short wavelength component of blue light with the discovery of melanopsins, to red light, rich in long wavelength which gives the same vigilance results without interfering with melatonin secretion.

When red light helps us get back to sleep

We now know that the low exposure to natural daylight associated with the use of screens on phones, tablets, computers and televisions – with a predominantly blue light component – disrupts the circadian rhythm and the quality of sleep.

A recent study by the French National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) concludes in this regard.

At the opposite, exposing yourself to red light helps to regulate this circadian rhythm and reconnect with better light hygiene.
